Maple Energy Gels: What Is in Them
A maple energy gel is a running gel that uses maple syrup as its carbohydrate. In a Sève gel, maple syrup is the first ingredient, and each gel has 26 g of carbohydrates, 100 calories, 190 mg of sodium and 125 mg of potassium.
What's in the pouch
Flow, our base gel, has three ingredients: maple syrup, sodium citrate and potassium citrate. The other two formulas start from the same base.
Per gel, all three formulas have:
- 26 g carbohydrates
- 100 calories
- 190 mg sodium
- 125 mg potassium
- Flow: the base. No caffeine.
- Focus: adds 70 mg caffeine.
- Recover: 50 mg magnesium per gel. No caffeine.
What does it taste like?
Maple, because it is. If you like maple syrup on a Sunday, that's the taste. If you find it too sweet straight from the jug, try one before you buy a box. The Variety 3-Pack is the small way to do that.
Is it just maple syrup in a pouch?
Mostly, and we're fine with that. Maple syrup comes first on the list. We add sodium citrate and potassium citrate, and we print the milligrams. Then we put it in a pouch you can carry and open on a run. Focus and Recover add one more ingredient each.
How do you take a maple gel?
The same way our label says for every formula: 1 pouch every 30 min during endurance activity, follow with water. For sessions over an hour, we also recommend a first gel 5 minutes before you start. That's our advice, not a label direction. Try it in training before you use it in a race.
Is a maple gel right for you?
We make them, so here is the fair version. Maple isn't only ours. Other brands make maple gels too, and their numbers differ. Read each label and compare carbohydrates, sodium, potassium and caffeine per gel. Then pick the one you'll take on the long run you have this weekend.
A maple gel may suit you if:
- You like the taste of maple syrup.
- You want a short ingredient list you can read in a few seconds.
- You'd like one base with a choice of caffeine or none.
It may not suit you if you don't enjoy sweet maple flavour. That's fine too. A gel you won't take isn't much use.
